Georgia Initiative for Community Housing

Evans County is proud to be part of the Georgia Initiative for Community Housing (GICH). The GICH program helps communities create and launch a locally based plan to meet their housing and neighborhood revitalization needs through:

  • Technical Assistance
  • Collaboration
  • Expert Presenters
  • Training
  • Facilitation
  • Consensus Building
  • Networking
  • Mentoring

During the three-year program of technical assistance and cross-community sharing, participating community housing teams will:

  • Attend two retreats a year with other participating communities
  • Identify issues and needs, available resources, and potential obstacles
  • Develop new ideas about meeting local housing needs and enhancing community development
  • Learn about best practices and available resources and funding for housing and community development
  • Produce a community housing plan with objectives and goals
  • Begin implementation of the action plan

Our Housing Needs

● Need to address slum & blight
● Lack of Middle-Income Housing
● Lack of Senior Housing

Lack of Middle Income Housing

“We have the opportunity to hire… We are skeptical in hiring from out of area because they usually do not move and transfer back to home county at the first opportunity.  If we had better affordable housing to offer our prospective employees we would be able to obtain, keep employees and bring young professional people to our area.  Even current staff are living in Statesboro due to a better range of housing.”

Rose Morris, Evans/Candler DFCS County Administrator

“We work with our new hires each year to help them find suitable housing and it is a difficult task. Over half of our teacher work force live in other counties and commute to work, mostly due to the housing situation.”

- Dr. Joy S. Collins, Superintendent

Lack of Senior Housing

Evans County has a higher percentage of senior residents than the state average. With the exception of Assisted Living facilities, there are no Senior specific housing options currently available.
